a voice that is dark like tinted glass

on my mind lately.

" america’s like a brand, and we used to be the louis vuitton of countries. and then we had a really shit head designer for a while, but now we’ve got a really dope young head guy that can hopefully turn this brand around. "
- kanye west and his take on politics

these boots from aldo have been making me swoon for a while now. as they've suddenly dropped some fourty dollars in cost, i've been praying for them not to sell out before i can get my hands on them. they're like the tough-luxe look (hello, studs? and black leather) meets casual-chic (slouchy, comfy, but still very attractive). and practical, to boot (pun intended).

nicole richie's recent winter style is really cute.
and i will forever love her hair.

so much snow today.
like you have no idea.
unless you live in canada ... or the arctic.

if you give it a minute it's wrong

this is what i decided to throw on upon arriving home today. forgive me for blurry pictures and an awfully messy room (the first is my camera's fault ... the second, well, i have no excuse). the dress is from h&m (isn't that purpleredpink floral pattern a dead giveaway ?) and the tights are very thick and very reliable. i thought it was a suitable outfit for drinking cranberry tea (mmm) from a cup with my baby picture on it ! apparently i had the cutest little sailor-style onesie ever.

oh & have you ever heard of a little canadian magazine called naked eye ? i hadn't, until a few days ago, though i really should have. upon revising previous issues, i saw that they had mentioned the lovely lykke li before indie-sensation-hungry fashionistas could sink their teeth into her magical talent. i also saw that they went to the lengths of featuring ben & jerry's latest ice cream flavour, artfully titled bohemian raspberry (a queen reference, no less) for the sake of giving readers what they want ... and god knows they all want frozen treats. there's a little something for everybody: the kooks (yay) and finger eleven (gag).
i'm at a time right now where i have decisions riding me like there's no tomorrow, choices to be made about my future and so on. and while i questioned my real-life desire to write and create for a living, i had somewhat lost hope in the possibility of success in a community where it's exponentially hard to make your mark.
however, naked eye (fortunately) proved me wrong. it is, hands down, one of the most terrifically written and visually pleasing magazines i have ever read. take that, nylon ! it's not that i expect naked eye to join the ranks of paris vogue or dazed & confused as the iconic magazine of our time, but it's got a lot of the other 'pop-culture-meets-fashion-meets-hipster-meets-raaaaaad' magazines beat. again, nylon included. i'm telling you, you don't need cory & peaches to harbour a hit ... all you need are some witty writers and passion. period.

check out the five issues for yourself here.
they're gold.

girl with crimson nails has jesus round the neck

skyscraper platform heels clomp across decrepit asphalt streets, kick through crumpled leaves, and strut confidently into the hippest club around. she meanders through the undulating bodies and takes a seat in a secluded booth, crossing her lithe sequined legs. picking up her head, she scans the room, looking past the camera whores and the hipsters; settling her viridescent eyes on the heavy black speakers spilling out techno beats and metallic voices. it was almost as though she could see, through the curling haze of cigarette smoke, straight into the music. into the vibrating guitar strings, into the raspy whispering lyrics, into the ivory keys of the piano. she shivered, the cobweb holes of her sweater exposing her pale skin to the air. music always made her feel this way, like she was the only one in the room, apart from everyone else. immune to the flashing lights and wasted girls. she figured it was better that way, as she stood up up and walked out, the night breeze sweeping her away.

people call us renegades

this afternoon, i decided to (attempt at) taking a few pictures, in the spirit of autumn and its ever-changing leaves and picturesque lanscapes. turns out, my semi-ripped nylons seemed to be the focus of quite a few shots instead.
that says a lot about my photography (or just basic aim) skills.

i was wearing sheer tights from zellers, a super oversized (i think it's a size 37 in men's ... is that big ?) christian dior dress shirt that i scored for something like two dollars, a skinny stud belt from h&m and a cotton bandage skirt for the sake of wearing bottoms (also from h&m).
funny that i prioritize bottoms before shoes, especially when chilly weather leaves the ground cold and humid. well, i learnt my lesson: always keep a good pair of keds on hand !
anywho, that was my day. well, that plus grad pictures in the morning, a trip to a local mall in the afternoon (i spent most of the time in a bookstore ... leaving empty-handed, sadly), and the much-appreciated viewing of baby mama. poehler & fey rocked it !

que sera sera, whatever will be will be

how to look hot on the streets of new york.
lily and raquel obviously rock it, but it's in their blood. for the mere mortal, try falke tights, chunky knits, the omnipresent motorcycle jacket & a pop of colour such as fuchsia louboutins.
all that's missing are some fire escapes to climb up for the best view of the best city.

i (haveneverbeento) ny

voila, my fall wardrobe.
sumptuous furs, greys, blood red nails and lips, complete with badass extras. these clothes embody the tough grunge chic i adore. albeit a bit fantastical (my meager budget won't allow for splurges such as those killer chanel heels), it still remains as the inspiration for my autumnal garb.
all i've got to do is add my omnipresent ripped nylons and circle my peepers with slate liner and i'm all set for the season of crispy leaves and pumpkin spice lattes.

July 24, 2008

i heard that cali never rains.

my bags aren't packed. i'm leaving in less than two days and i haven't even begun packing. i suppose i've mentally compiled a few lists of items that will be completely necessary on the west coast, but if i could have it my way, i'd bring everything.
unfortunately, though, my dad rented a prius (an environmental gem, albeit as small as they come) and oversized luggage is unacceptable. and for that reason, i must pick & choose my garments one by one, all the while leaving room in my suitcase for everything i plan on bringing back to canada in the near future.

anyway, since i'm leaving around 5:30am on saturday, i've only got today and tomorrow left for posting. tomorrow will be fully occupied with packing & whatnot (although i will try to squeeze in some time to show you the final product before i leave), which leaves today for every last tidbit of information that i could possibly leave for you to chew on in my absence.
firstly, my two favourites on project runway season five.

also, i suddenly felt the urgent need to comment on balenciaga's fall collection (like it hasn't already been done a million times). what i like the most about nicolas ghesquière is his linear approach to fashion. his creations are true pieces of art - complex and breathtaking - all the while seeming to be molded to the woman's body, in a way that a rare few have seen done before. also, he has the talent of blending together different eras - one can automatically think modern while gawking at his designs, but can also be catapulted into the past, be it '50s or far before that.

oh, & as we cover garment trends & shoe trends & bag trends, why not take a peek at nail polish trends. for me, adorning my nails with vivid hues is just a different way to express myself. actually, i used to never paint my nails - couldn't find the time, lack of interest (which also entailed lack of ability) - but once turned into twice and before i knew it i was vigorously reapplying different shades everytime the old ones wore out. i wouldn't say i'm a nail polish junkie, but i like to think that a set of well-manicured fingertips is now a fundamental.

i love the baby blue on whitney port & rihanna, as well as eva's navy. i hope to purchase a blue-tinted opi nail lacquer sometime (soon) - either russian navy or i'm dating a royal.

lastly, i shall leave with you a little outfit i put together at a whim, something i could definitely see a girl sporting while sipping a starbucks latte on the corner of melrose & highland.

barbara bui shoes from shopjake; motif tights off of a picture on the cobrasnake; lux zipper skirt from urban outfitters, antik batik bag from shopbop; & triblend tank from american apparel.

spent the night guessing.

i can't say i've experienced it firsthand, but i'm under the impression that prom is quite the opulent soirée. based solely on what i've been told, prom is the night where even the most slothful adolescent makes an effort to look good - some in a more sublime way than others - for the sake of sweet memories.

goth-chic:

notte by marchesa dress, roberto cavalli shoes, christian lacroix cuff.

neo-classic:
tracy resse dress, christian louboutin flats, bottega veneta clutch.

the hipster:

calvin klein dress, luella clutch, christian louboutin pumps.

[from net-a-porter & la garconne]
this is a girl who runs the gamut from the beach and the streets to the party scene.
her ensembles are parsimonious and thrifty, but are heightened by her intensely glamorous extras.
she embodies a swank comfort and versatility that is emulated by many, yet acheived by very few, and doesn't she know it. she's confident and laced with faint arrogance, the sort of person you always envy.
her long body is tanned and smooth, her brilliant eyes glistening and blazing with adventure, begging for some excitement.
she incites intrigue.
curiosity may have killed the cat, but this girl is far from dead; she's a live wire and she's lighting up all the dance floors.

loose limbed in montreal.

never leave home without ...

weekend trip away:
marc by marc jacobs luggage, pucci bandeau bikini, stella mccartney studded racerback dress, oversized miu miu handbag, giusepe zanotti sandals, christian louboutin peep-toe heels, cotton miu miu flippy skirt, stella mccartney brassiere, notify denim shorts, billowy vanessa bruno tee.

these necessities should definitely be pulled from your wardrobe to spend the weekend away from home. to rival scenesters with their brights and neo-hippies with their grunge attire, the above items are supremely relevent for the modern-day globe-trotter.

paris rendez-vous:
boyy weekender, myla silk bra, bottega venetta woven clutch, silk marchesa dress, vivienne westwood red label bone bracelet, pringle of scotland top, rick owens lilies jersey pants, christian louboutin pumps, hanii y oversized wool coat, d&g boots.

while taking time away in the city of lights, you wouldn't want to look sickeningly sweet. for that reason, balance out pretty & tough by adding shots of colour and frills to a mostly somber array of clothes - all of which serve as a badge for a woman on a mission.

are you kidding me ? natural kangaroo ?! leather is one thing, considering that the majority of people consume cows, but i don't know of anyone that eats kangaroos.
